Solid Stone

Kirigami

Description

Artfully shaped into geometric patterns, stone becomes as versatile as paper.

Named after a variant of the Japanese decorative art of origami, this collection comprises a remarkable set of stone surfaces that look almost like sheets of paper creased and folded into three dimensions.

The effect is painstakingly achieved by first taking flat slabs of limestone, marble or sandstone, then chiselling away selected sections to leave the unsculpted parts seemingly raised, creating alternating zones of light and shade.

The results emerge from the stone as striking patterns of hexagons, triangles and kite shapes, radial lines and zig-zags that form steps, terraces and castellations.
